Attukal Pongala Mahotsavam 2018


Atukal Pongala is the main festival of this temple. Attukal Pongala Mahotsavam is a 10 days festival which falls on February - March every year (Malayalam month of Kumbham). The festival begins on the Karthika star with the traditional Kappukettu and Kudiyiruthu ceremony, the idol of Devi, is embellished with Kappu (Bangles). The 9th day of the festival is the major attraction, The Attukal Pongala day and the festival will conclude with the Kuruthitharpanam at 10th day night.

Millions of women gather every year in the month of Kumbham around this temple and prepare Pongala (rice cooked with jaggery, ghee, coconut as well as other ingredients) in the open in small pots to please the Goddess Kannaki. Pongala (literally means to boil over) is a ritualistic offering of a sweet dish, consisting of rice porridge, sweet brown molasses, coconut gratings, nuts and raisins. It is done as an offering to the presiding deity of the temple - the Goddess - popularly known as Attukal Amma. Only women are allowed to participate in the Pongala ritual.

NSSK Thiruvathirakali Competition(Mannam Trophy)

N.S.S. Karnataka is committed to preserve and continue with the traditional socio-cultural heritage of Kerala.  Those traditions have meaning, values, binding among neighborhoods and most importantly an opportunity to engage in activities culminating in happiness and celebrations.

The traditional THIRUVATHIRA KALI  aka Kaikottikali  is one of the most popular dance form meant for ladies of all age groups in Kerala. Thiruvathira kali is a group performance with simple and attractive steps. The sinuous circular pirouetting movements extended by the group of dancers around traditional lamp (Nilavilakku) embody Lasya or the amorous charm and grace of the feminine singing melodious and well known songs. Thiruvathira kali is considered to be a ritual performance and celebration of complete happiness displaying female energy.

Members from 8 Stree shakti units of NSS Karanataka karayogams in Bangalore participated in an inter-karayogam Mannam Trophy Thiruvathira kali competition on Sunday the 23rd April 2017 at Eastern Cultural Society (E.C.A.) hall. Presenting the 4 bhavas of Thiruvathira – Sthuthi,Mandam Kummy and Mangalam, each participating team excelled in their performance with grace and charm following the traditional guidelines in dress code, music, rhythm, thalam and team work. A panel of eminent judges was present to select the best of three from the participating team. Yashwantapuram karayogam team bagged the first position and rolling trophy.  R.T.Nagar Karayogam team stood in the second position and Malleshpalya team was selected as the third position winner.  Judges complemented all the participating teams for their excellent professional presentations and gave their considered views and opinions for improvement in certain specific areas so that the teams can further fine tune their skills.

Trophies, cash prize and individual prizes were distributed to all participants.
